Facebook Is All Set To Work On End-To-End Encryption On Facebook Messenger
Looks like Facebook Messenger is all set to make the platform a go-to app for all. After making text messages available on Messenger, you can now hold secret conversations on Messenger using an opt-in service that Facebook is presently testing on Messenger. Yes! You will soon be enjoying end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger. According to the Vice President of messaging products of Facebook, David Marcus, Messenger is making these new changes to make it the primary messaging platform for all users.
With security being the top concern for Facebook Messenger now, it is working to get things right so that people can exchange private one-to-one conversations on Facebook without any fear of eavesdropping. But the new feature comes with several disadvantages as well. For example, you will not be able to send GIFs or videos using Messenger if you opt for the Secret Conversation option when the end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger is on. However, do you need to send GIFs when you are having a critical private conversation that you don’t want anybody else to peep into? Well, I guess not.
What is the technology being used for end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger?
The Secret Conversations feature is built on the same Signal protocol from Open Whisper Systems that Whatsapp uses for its end-to-end encryption mode. Professor Alan Woodward, a cyber-security expert from Surrey University thinks that Signal is one of the most renowned protocols in the cryptography community and it has really good reviews on its performance. According to him, if he has to choose from a modern messaging app, he will opt for one based on Signal, so much confidence he has on the protocol. And now, the Secret Conversations on the social network will work with the same protocol, i.e. end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger. So, you can guess how much secured your private conversations will be.
Not all your messages will have end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger
Unlike Whatsapp, the end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger is a choice that depends on its users. You can switch to the Secret Conversations mode while holding a regular conversation with anyone and you can also set a time limit for the visibility of your messages. This feature will help you to take care of any message that you do not want to remain visible for long like any account related information, health news or financial information. After you have exchanged the private information between your trusted ally, you can again switch to the normal version of chat, bidding farewell to end-to-end encryption.
The Secret Conversations feature is in testing stage for now but it will soon be available to all users in need of end-to-end encryption to share critical private information on the messaging app. Facebook will take in all feedback and implement tools to enrich the new feature during its testing phase so that when the feature is ready to launch, there will be no mishaps. However, this feature will only be available to the iOS and Android users as soon as it is launched and not other desktop messaging services and you will be able to read encrypted messages only on one device. The encryption will be so strong that even Facebook will not be able to peep into it keeping malicious attackers at bay. So, are you ready for this new feature to take the messaging platform to another level? Let us know your thoughts on the matter. Till then, keep exchanging your private conversations on Whatsapp with end-to-end encryption for all messages.
