Now, You Can Find A Self Driving Uber In Pittsburgh
Uber has started its own self driving experience and you will soon get to see self driving Uber cars on the streets of Pittsburgh. The ride hailing service thus lays the foundation on a driver-less future by testing a self driving hybrid Ford Fusion with several radars and sensors to take down environment details as well as test self driving capabilities. When you take a glimpse of the car, you will feel that it is designed for a superhero, so classy and well furnished it looks.
The self driving Uber cars will be seen in the streets of Pittsburgh very soon, probably in the next few weeks. The company’s ATC (Advanced Technologies Center) has fitted the car with top notch equipment like high resolution cameras, laser scanners and radar to enhance the driving experience. Apart from all that, it will also have an expert driver present inside the car to mitigate adversities, if any.

We already heard gossips about the self driving Uber cars when it opened the ATC just one year back but now it has been publicly confirmed. In fact, a Tribune-Review reporter has also been taken for a ride in one of the autonomous vehicles with an expert driver and the experience was quite enthralling. According to John Bares, Pittsburgh provided a solid base for testing the self driving vehicles because of its unstable weather conditions, hilly roads and poor infrastructure. Confused? Well, he said that if the car can perform well even in such adverse situations, it will fare well in other regions too.
Why has Pittsburgh been chosen for testing the self driving Uber cars?
There are two main reasons why Pittsburgh has been selcted as the base to test the self driving Uber cars. Firstly, its Advanced Technologies Center (ATC) located in Pittsburgh offers it the opportunity for research and innovation in self driving technology. Secondly, the rough roads, unstable weather conditions and poor traffic provide a challenging opportunity to enhance the self driving experience. The Director of ATC said so in an interview to the Tribune-Review. Thus, Pittsburgh is the ideal place to test self driving Uber cars and take them to the next level, that is to provide them for hiring once they have been fully tested and certified.
What other companies are working towards autonomous vehicles?
Uber’s rival Lyft is also working towards developing self driving vehicles. Only recently, an investment of $500 million dollars has been made into the company to make way for self driving cars for hire. The investor is none other than General Motors or GM. The partnership is going to be really profitable as Lyft is great in providing cars for hire and General Motors has been working on autonomous technology for quite some time now. But the best thing about this partnership is that GM is escalating from the automobile industry to ride-hailing services. The duo can give Uber a run for its money if conditions favor.
Trained and expert drivers are going to be there during the test drive
For now, a trained and expert driver is going to be present behind the wheel at all times to ensure nothing bad happens. According to the reporter of Tribune-Review, who was taken for a drive across the streets of Pittsburgh, the car performs all braking, steering and accelerating functions on its own but the driver can take control of it anytime he deems necessary. This makes it quite safe for the pedestrians, cyclists and other people on the road.
Uber has acquired permission for testing its self driving cars from local authorities and it aims towards building a future that can help in providing a safe environment for everybody and reduce road accidents as far as possible.
